Bill White Report by Patty Attel

I sacrificed my Glenn Beck show to go to the Bill White Town Hall on education. When I drove up to the building the parking lot was full, and I anticipated a huge number of participants inside, but there were only 60 or so. There were TV cameras and White’s daughter introduced their family friend, Rene Nunez, who then introduced Bill White. I was surprised that the participants were very quiet and seemingly downtrodden. If this is the feeling of the Democrat Party, we are going to be big winners come November. When White came to the microphone people slowly rose to their feet led by the front row of school dignitaries including EPISD’s Garcia and one of his board members.
I have one good thing to say about White – he didn’t have a teleprompter. When I was at the GOP convention recently, I wondered what a Democrat convention would be like. White was rambling on about something and threw in a comment concerning our agreement on every side that the troops at Fort Bliss should be supported even if you didn’t agree with the wars. There was absolutely no applause. If they had said that at the GOP convention everyone would have jumped to their feet and slapped and yelled and whistled. Very telling, I think.
He opened it up to questions and one man, a teacher, told him about the recent TRE failure and what ideas did White have to raise money for the schools. White rambled on and never answered his question. Rusty Booth, Louie Southard, and Jeff Gonzalez, all UTEP College Republicans, were also there. Rusty asked him why he wouldn’t release his tax returns. White said that he had released more tax documents than any other candidate and Perry was using the tax issue because he is afraid to debate him (White). At the end White thanked everyone for coming including the “Perry Plant”.
White made a couple of jabs at Governor Perry and told about how great Houston was when he was mayor – which, of course, is a lie-especially the part about how they absorbed all the Katrina children in the school system and how they thrived. It was a disaster I have been told. Also he said that the crime in Houston went down when he was mayor. A friend of mine who lives in Sugarland told me that the crime got so bad they made the newspapers quit reporting it! More liberal compliance. I guess that’s it. Patty
